Susan Saar is a painter and jazz vocalist, who lives in Manhattan, NYC. She started painting at an early age in her mother’s painting classes which were taught in the basement of her childhood home. She went on to study art and photography at SUNY Purchase, and later studied painting with Susan Sargeant at the 92nd St Y, and with Dan Gheno at the Art Students League in Manhattan.
She is currently working on a series of colorful, whimsical, jazz-themed images, often featuring abstract, twisted, and fantastical instruments, created mostly while listening to live jazz.
“I’m deeply steeped in the music and in learning about jazz history. As a singer, I’m already spending a lot of time where jazz is happening. By shifting from paint to alcohol markers which are more portable, less messy, and blend wonderfully like watercolors, I’m prepared to capture the movement, the shapes, and colors in the music while it’s being played.”
