In 73CE, a group of Jewish rebels retreated to a fortress on the cliffs os Masada, which overlooks the Judean Desert and the Dead Sea. After a three month battle with the Romans, the 960 Jewish people living there committed suicide rather than succumb to the Romans. This painting is a view through the ancient rocks of the fortress, looking out at the desert and the Dead Sea, with Jordan in the background.
