An International Juried Exhibition of 21st Century Baskets as Sculptural Form.
“Traditionally, baskets are thought of as containers designed to hold things. (My) works explore the ways in which these vessels - as sculptures and enclosures - hold ideas rather than objects,” so says Nancy Koenigsberg one of over 25 artists from Ireland to Oregon selected to represent 21st Century Sculptural Basketry in this exhibition.
Blue Door Gallery invited artists to submit innovative works in all media that contained weaving as a major component of their structures. Building on the traditions of their artistic forbearers and calling upon their individual transformational creative ideas and passions, these artists have broken ground with the past. As such, New Weaves is an expansion on traditional concepts of basketry; and showcases non-functional shapes using non-traditional materials like ceramic, leather and metal in two and three-dimensional works in a wide range of sizes.
