Curators Statement: "Ancestors," for me, are people who made a difference through sacrifice and through connection to their people. Connection means that their influence lives on in future generations. What I have learned is that one doesn't have to be famous, rich, or even highly-educated to be an ancestor. One only has to make positive connections and create profound differences in one's community, which generates change in behavior, change in direction, change in beliefs, and change in attitudes.
If I had to select a personal ancestor, I would choose my grandmother, because of the great influence she had on my life but also on everyone she came into contact with. And the most significant area in my life where my grandmother influenced me was to be hopeful, no matter how dim, how dark, how destructive my surroundings were. I am so grateful, although I lost my grandmother this year, that her presence and influence live in me daily, especially now, because our future is so uncertain.
The exhibit "Ancestors" is extremely important, because it reminds us how much we need their strength to succeed and survive life's challenges. - Dennis Shelton
