Nora Balaban is a New York City–based visual artist and musician. Her pen-and-ink drawings are shaped by years of immersion in the traditional music of Zimbabwe and Mozambique, where she studied and performed with master musicians. She has performed extensively with her own groups in the U.S. and internationally.
Her work draws on the rhythms of African music and patterns found in nature, built through intuitive, layered mark making. Rhythm and repetition run through both her drawing and her music. “I see patterns when I play, I hear rhythms when I draw.”
Her artwork has been exhibited at Betsy Campbell Gallery, Upstream Gallery, Blue Door Art Center, Art Gotham, EV Gallery, La MaMa, Village Works, and Saint Marks Arts.
