About David Dixon

I have always been an artist. As a kid growing up in the Bronx, I would mold clay animals, stashing the materials in a dresser drawer, until my mother discovered it that is. Later painting oil portraits for friends’ parents was a way to make a few extra dollars during my high school years at Music and Art. Two years of college followed but it was not for me at that time. I dropped out of college and enlisted in the US Coast Guard, completed my telecommunications engineering degree and retired three decades later. Now retired I devote myself full time to developing my artistic career.

I am an avid international traveler. I relish incorporating the sights and feelings of my travel experiences into my work, but my greatest muse is jazz and the extraordinary artists who play it. I capture impressions of jazz musicians in my representational work and the moods and vibes of their music in my abstract work. I use various media to create representational and non-figurative work. Increasingly I have been incorporating photography into my practice by digitally combining my photos with my abstract painting to form photo collages.

I frequently show my work at various venues and participate in art associations and collectives. I also take classes to advance my portraiture skills at the NYC Art Students League. I have exhibited in NYC, Rockland County, Westchester County, Washington, DC and Provincetown, MA.
